Last year I began the year with this great idea. Well… “great idea” in quotes. I figured that I would do monthly updates on Nix Comics progress. To keep it from being too dry, I would also include on an going list of the records I listened to everyday. Why did this idea seem so great? Well, people have historically liked my year end balance sheet blog posts where I lay out my revenues and expenditures, using them as a springboard to talk about my plans and schemes for next year. And I find the records I listen to inspirational, so why wouldn’t everybody else?
Well, it wasn’t actually such a great idea. it became hard for me to keep up with the posts, which lead to stress. Stress that wasn’t abated by the fact that no one seemed to actually be reading these monthly posts… I should’ve just let it go, but as many of you know, “letting it go” isn’t so much in my nature. When I promise to do something, even if only to myself, I feel obligated to fulfill. So… Two full months into 2022, here’s my report on Nix Comics in December 2021, along with a quick year-end wrap.
NIX COMICS DECEMBER 2021 REVENUE AND EXPENSES:
I finished up strong revenue and expense wise on the year, thanks to Kent Grosswiler buying a chunk of his Finding Beauty In Darkness back-stock and ad revenue from the Mug and Brush Barber Shop for Tales From The Crate #6. The only expense was shipping a Kickstarter reward. That will continue in drips and drabs as I still am working to fulfill a few pledges… everything is made but there have been ongoing communication and scheduling issues with the last few backers. (Again, stressful to have unfulfilled promises!)
NIX COMICS 2021 TOTAL REVENUE AND EXPENSES:
Viewed through a lens of money in and out, this was the best year Nix Comics has had to date. That’s not an accident: I’ve been in a state of semi-employment as I finished up my degree in Public Policy, Leadership and Management at Ohio State and for the first time ever I needed my Comics to actually make money. I mean… I always wanted Nix to make money, but it was never a driving force in my decision making until recently. The bummer of that is that the kind of books I want to get back to, collaborative full color stuff, has been pushed aside because I have no idea how to make money at that. seriously… No issue of Nix Comics Quarterly has ever made money.
I wish that this financial success provided me with some sort of blueprint for continued success going ahead, but the on going changes in the comics industry have left me in a state of… uncertainty. My printing company of choice, Page by Page Copies, has at least temporarily closed doors. I’m fairly certain that I can find a similarly priced alternative, but haven’t committed the time yet. More concerning are my growing qualms with using Kickstarter as my main platform for sales. Between the roadblocks to unionization the company threw up a couple years ago and its recent decision to use blockchain technology for its transactions, I just don’t know if I’m willing to continue that business relationship.
RECORDS I LISTENED TO IN DECEMBER 2021
So I ended up listening to 259 records in December, 8.35 per day average.
The total on the year came out to 1,867 records for all of 2021, or 5.11 per day.
I got more info, but don’t worry. I’m going to keep on keeping track of the records I listen to in my sketchbook for my own nevermind, but I won’t bore y’all with the details in anymore.
