Nix Comics April 2024 Update

This month was all about comics shows.

Mid month, I went to STAPLE in Austin as a fan. What a terrific show! I definitely recommend that artists and publishers take a step back from tabling and visit some shows as a fan rather than as a vendor. For me its sometimes difficult to capture that feeling of excitement I had as a fan whose only stake was finding something to enjoy. Its a perspective that’s important not to lose. (He said as he went on to talk about tabling…)

SPACE HAUL Pt. 1

The 25th Small Press and Alternative Comics Expo (SPACE) was the last weekend of April. As I’ve said many times in the past… This is my favorite “comics show.” You get the full spectrum of artists and art: From award winning and experienced pros to true beginners sharing their work for the very first time. SPACE is run by Bob Corby, who has worked hard to keep the show affordable and accessible to everyone involved. for vendors, cheaper tables than other shows of similar size and free admission for fans. It’s the community we deserve as artists.

I worry about SPACE, though. It feels like reaching the folks who would enjoy the show is getting more and more difficult. There were plenty of open tables, despite them being cheaper and having no barriers like juried entry. The foot traffic seemed light in comparison to past years. That said, I did OK sales-wise, about the same as last year and enough to break even on Nix Comics expenses for the year-to-date. I just can’t help but wonder why in a town where people get absolutely rabid about losing institutions like WWCD and Rag-O-Rama, a truly local and independent event like SPACE is treated like a red headed step child. (For those of you not from Columbus, I guess you can look up WWCD and Rag-o-Rama. Suffice to say people got really bent out of shape about a radio station crashing and burning and a semi-national vintage clothing chain pulling out of town suddenly. I got my opinions on all that, which are best shared in one-on-one conversations.)

SPACE HAUL Pt. 2

Anyways, SPACE will likely be my last comics show this year. Yep… No CXC. Which is a development that I have mixed and nuanced feelings about. (Again, I’m willing to discuss it, but it’s best left to one-on-one conversations.) Anyways, I’m not going to be seeking out any other comic shows. I’m going to try and make the best out of my investment in the Herbert Cooper Gallery and on-line sales instead.

RECORDS LISTENED TO APRIL 2024

Milestone: Thee Dagger Debs’s self-titled LP was 1000th record I listened to this year was from Kate’s collection. I’m not sure how she got hip to the Dagger Debs, other than just knowing that Damaged Goods is a generally excellent label. However it ended up in my household, I’m happy about it!  A loud three piece with a distinctive 60s Mod/R&B bent… Maybe with a touch of 70s glam in the Chin-Chapman vein. Certainly worthy of being a milestone marker in my 2024 vinyl tour

With all the trips and shows and such, I listened to the least number of records/month in April to date this year. My compulsive side hates reporting that, but its not like I’m doing this for money or anything. Just a weird virtue signal about putting my money where my mouth is in terms of enjoying vinyl records.  Anyways… Here’s the full April list, even if its comparatively puny:

STAPLE and my Austin Haul

Last week I had the distinct pleasure of heading down to Austin to visit some old friends. The trip coincided with STAPLE!, Austin’s independent media festival. (I had originally thought about tabling at the show, but in the end it was best just to visit as a fan! Of particular interest for me were the tables hosted by Mattchee (I’ve been a fan for a couple years!), J. Michael Stovall (Who I feel like I should have been a fan of for years), and Logan Beecher (new artist to me, but LOOKIT THAT ROCK N ROLL KNIGHT!!!!) among others!

My Haul from STAPLE!

Of course, I visited some stores as well. There wasn’t a whole lot of time and I was catching up with my friends more than tourist-ing, so maybe not as in depth a comic/record/neat-stuff exploration as I would normally take on vacation. The first stop on recommendation was an antique/curiosity shop called Uncommon Objects. I ended up buying the old photos below, which I’ve already used to draft a ghost story likey to be a zine soon. It was a very cool shop. If I hadn’t been traveling and on a limited luggage space and budget, I could’ve dropped a pretty penny. Highly recommended!

Right across the street from Uncommon Objects is End of an Ear records, which I’m pretty sure was at a different location the last time I was in Austin. Its a very nice shop, and I like the way they have their 45s set up. (I browsed the LPs, but again… Travelling.) This also might result in a zine (Tales from the Crate, though I have two of those I’m currently working on already!) Apologies to whoever tried to hide the white-label-promo copy of ? and the Mysterians’ “(Girl) you Captivate Me” in the cheap section on the bottom shelf. Found it. Bought it. Actually, not sorry.

I had not planned to buy anymore stuff… But happenstance brought me to a strip mall that had a comic shop (Tribe Comics and Games) where I picked up a local book about Bigfoot knowing karate…. Titled “Bigfoot Knows Karate” and a discount collection of old EC Weird Science comics. I was pleasantly surprised that they had a small local section.

Next strip mall over was a Half-Priced Book with a particularly good selection of 45s. Most of those will be fuel for the Sketchbook Picture Sleeves project, but there are a couple of keepers. Dig the art on the Peach Kelli Pop disc!

Nix Comics March 2024 Update

What Happened In March 2024?

March was a busy month personally and day-job wise, which led to not a lot of things getting done for Nix Comics. (That trend has lasted into April, seems. I can’t believe it’s already the 9th!) I had some sales at the Herbert Cooper Gallery, though not enough to cover the rent for my space there. I need to put some work into making that space work a little better, so hopefully you’ll see more from me soon on that front.

It was my birthday on March 29th. I turned 53! I managed to stretch my celebration out from Thursday the 28th to Sunday the 31st, because I’m old now and everything takes longer. Thursday was dinner with Kate and our good friends Mike and Heather at the nautically themed Windward passage. Friday was pizza at Fibonacci’s. Saturday was a trip down to Cincinnati for a record buying binge at the Northside Record Fair and Shake-It Records, followed by a shopping spree at the giant grocery emporium Jungle Jim’s. The latter spree let me put out a nice table for a brunch time celebration with friends at home.

Here is a partial picture of my Record Fair and Shake-It Haul. (For the full list of B-Day records, its all but two of the records dated 3/31 below in the “Records Listened To” report. I’ll let you guess which two I already owned.)

Anyways… I thought it was more important to add the comics I grabbed at Shake-It. How is there so much great stuff there every time I go? get with it Cinci comics kids… there’s a cool hidey-hole of books that you should be supporting!

Records Listened To In March 2024

Includes all of the records purchased at the Northside Record Fair and Shake It in the 30th, natch! I listened to 230 records total, kind of a low number, but work kept me from any real deep dives. I did ask for themes from Facebook friends for my daily record pulls for my work day. I only got to such four pulls, and only wrote up two of them. Perhaps when I am a man of leisure I can do better!

TODAY’S RECORD LISTENING THEME: COVERS THAT HOP GENRES

Last week when I asked my Facebook friends for a theme to base my day’s record listening on, I got a bunch of great responses.  I’ve decided to take a swing at all of them! (In no particular order.

1. Today I am going to do the suggestion “Covers that hop genres.” It’s actually a a little tough, because some of the best such covers are buried in LPs. I don’t usually skip around on LPs, so I’ll likely play a couple whole records to get to the pertinent stuff on them. (I may do a second take on this with only 45s. I got a bunch of themes too!)
2. Detroit
3. Aussie
4.Freedom
5. Stiv (Bators I presume)

Downliners Sect: The Birth of Suave: (LP, Hangman records Hang 42-Up) This record has quite a few covers, like most British Big Beat LPs have. I’m used to and fond of the usual American R&B and Blues covers from the Sect, but the reason I selected this LP is because until recently I didn’t know that the spooky grinder “Glendora” is actually a Perry Como cover!  (Thanks to Youtube channel Yesterday’s Papers for that tidbit and many more!) It’s definitely one of those covers that now leaves me perplexed in a “HOW in the world did they get here from THERE sort of ways.

Various Artists: We Do ‘Em Our Way: (LP, Music For Pleasure MFP 50481) Accomplishes what good cover song comps should do: Creates conversation. Good party record. I could probably go ny entire life without hearing the “Sex Pistols” version of “rock around the clock” again and be perfectly happy. It was funny the first few times that I heard it, but now its presence at the beginning of the this comp is an obstacle to listening to the whole record. The sex Pistols “stepping Stone” and Devo’s World Without Love.

Skid Roper & The Whirlin’ Spurs: Trails Plowed Under:  (LP, Triple X Records 51013-1)
This is a really great record. I wish that Skid had hung a few more of them together. There’s only one cover on this very country LP, but its a doozy of a genre hopper! Paint It Black, complete with a Kazoo fanfare. You kinda gotta hear it to believe it!

Ray Charles: Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music: (LP, ABC-Paramount T-90468) I think most folks would consider this album the gold standard for genre hopping covers. It’s probably the most favorite, and I do indeed love it….  But… I was struck by an interesting thought on this listen through. Charles’s versions are the ones that actually don’t hold up as well over time. The back up singers and string arrangements sound more than little old fashioned. The relatively stripped down versions hold up better, at least to my ear

Big Daddy: Self Titled: (LP, Rhino Records RNLP-852) OK. This is a novelty album, straight up. The premise is that a Sha-Na-Nesque band was lost on a desert isle for a couple of decades, and when they returned they tried to make the charts once again by performing new music in their old style. Not a bad gimmick. Not a great one either. The idea of doing (at the time) modern hits in a 50s or 60s style was pretty funny to me when I bought this record 30 years ago. Not as funny to my housemates at the time. I’ll stand by the Star Wars theme in Ventures style “Eye of the Tiger” have a certain amount of brilliance to them.

Etta James: Deep In The Night: (LP, Warner Brothers Records BSK 3156)
Basically a cover album, with some more in Etta’s expected wheelhouse than others. Alice Cooper’s only “Women Bleed” shows that in fact any song is in her Wheelhouse. Her version of “Take A Little Piece of My Heart” is pretty amazing too, though you’d expect that given how much Janis Joplin borrowed from other women blues artists. She even almost makes fuckin’ “Take It To The Limit” a credible song.

TODAY’S RECORD LISTENING THEME: ‘DETROIT’

Listening to a ton of records everyday is a lot of fun and inspiring.  It struck me this morning though, that its kind of random and aimless the way I go about it. (Often literally random, I walk up to my shelves and stick a finger on record to play.)

So today I asked my Facebook pals for a theme/prompt to pull a bunch of records. I got a bunch of great ones, but my friend Trish hit home with Detroit!  So here’s my “Detroit” themed playlist:

Bobby Bare: Detroit City: (Single, RCA Victor 47-8183)The first song that popped to mind about Detroit. (I don’t think Bobby ever lived there, but hey its a “theme” not a mandate to use only Detroit area artists.)I  really identify with the notion of unmet expectations that are woven through this country tune. “By day I make the cars, at night I make the bars” is about the most poetic indictment of the reality of an artistic life ever.

Suzi Quatro: Your Mama Won’t Like Me: (LP, Arista AL 4035): This record is a Chapman and Chinn glam classic. Weird, funky, mean and yet still very bubblegum. Suzi’s best album from this era was probably the Self Titled LP with Can the Can and the Detroit ode Shine My Machine, but this one is a really fun listen, with the title track, I Bit Off More Than I Can Chew, and her cover of Fever being standouts to me.

Alice Cooper: The Breadcrumbs: (10” EP, Ear Music 0214216EMU) Putting aside the ridiculous sticker calling this a limited edition of 20,000 copies, I was excited to buy this record a couple years ago. It’s a love story from Alice Cooper to his hometown with collaborations by other Detroit rockers like Mick Collins, Mark Farner, and Wayne Kramer. Perhaps not surprisingly my favorite song is Chains of Love with Collins, done as a medley with Devil in A Blue Dress ala Mitch Ryder.

? and the Mysterians: Cave Stomp Presents Are You For Real?: (LP, Rock Beat Records ROC 3456)  Essentially a greatest hits record produced for Record store day. Recorded after a live performance at the Cavestomp music fest. One of the most amazing live performers I’ve ever seen.. When I saw the band play at the tiny Rhumba Room in Columbus I thought I was going to get blow out the back window… SO MUCH ENERGY in such a small place.  Something had to give.

Edwin Starr: 25 Miles: (LP, Gordy GS940):  Natch, it could be a prompt on its own. I could easily spend a whole day playing cool Motown (and subsidiary label) records. This is my favorite, though. Maybe because it sounds like a Stax record. (Whoops!  Save it for a future “Memphis” theme day…)

Alice Cooper: Love It To Death: (LP, Warner Brothers WS 1883) Thing about Alice Cooper for me is that he always pulls me towards a deep dive. Maybe because the amazing and good songs are spread out across a bunch of of records. Knowing that I was already going to have to skip some of my favorite Detroit acts, I picked this album as the one most likely to satiate my compulsion. It worked, though an Alice Cooper deep dive my still be in my future

Cub Koda: Let’s Get Funky: (Single, New rose New 29): An only OK record by a generally better than OK album. Picking it for today was a concession to not having time to fit ina  full Brownsville Station LP.

Trash Brats: American Disaster Special Edition: (LP, Alien Snatch Records SNATCH 014) I have a deep affection for this band, stemming from the time that they played an in-store at Rudy Goose Comics. For a long time, the Trash Brats were one of those bands whose albums were only available on CD. I spent a long time hoping somebody would release their stuff on Vinyl. When Alien Snatch released this comp, I missed getting it new somehow, so I spent another long time waiting to find a used copy. I eventually did and there was much celebration in cow town.

Nikki Corvette & The Stingrays: Back To Detroit: (LP, Dollar Record records DRR 017)

I don’t know would you call this a “comeback” record?  The original Nikki & the Corvettes LP on Bomp! Records is a stone-cold power pop classic that came out in 1980.  My copy is a 1998 reissue, so it stayed popular enough to merit at least one repress.  This record (with the Stingrays, not Corvettes obviously) came out in 2006 and is at least as good. Better, I think. I certainly feel like I reach for it more than original LP! (Maybe instead of stone-cold, it’s red-hot) Ah fuck it… not a come back because Nikki clearly never went away.

HONORABLE MENTION:
I pulled the following records, but ran out of time in the day

  • Ko & The Knockouts: Self Titled
  • Gore Gore Girls: Get The Gore
  • The Gories: House Rockin’
  • Various Artists: Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit
  • King Uszniewicz And His Uszniewicztones: Teenage Dance Party

Nix Comics February 2024 Update

WHAT HAPPENED IN FEBRUARY 2024

Hey! Lookit me hanging two “monthly updates” in a row! Surprising It was a challenging month at the day-job (a lot to do in a short month) and I’m still on gabapentin for my back… So things have been a little… foggy. For what it’s worth, I’m still plugging away and things are happening for Nix Comics, if at a slower pace than I’d like.

Conversations With My Inner Demons: I managed to write and draw something nearly every day in February. This includes thumbnails and ideas for a comic where I have conversations with my various Inner Demons (Read: neuroses). For instance, this guy pictured above is COMPULSOR who makes me obsessively do “work” that most people would classify as “procrastination.” I have about 30 full four panel strips in this series thumbnailed out in my journal. Hopefully I can make ’em nice looking and publish them as a book at some point in the near future.

FIRST CLASS WARFARE: Like many of my small press peers, I have boxes and boxes of the first four issues of my back stock. Specifically, I have over a 1,00 copies of the first four issues of Nix Comics Quarterly. I tried to offer them up for $10 post paid on social media, posts which got a lot a shares but no takers for whatever reason. No biggie, except I get bummed every time I look the boxes. So I’m taking the bull by the horn and mailing out issues to cool looking records, comics, and zines shops across the country. The hope is that whether the person opening them at the store keeps them, sells them, or re-gifts them, that they at eventually end up in a happy home.

Of course, USPS has something to say about this plan. I bought a bunch of manila envelopes and stamps to send out the comics as first class mail. The whole thing weights just under 11 ounces, so that should would. SHOULD. I had a particularly officious clerk tell me that packages weren’t flexible enough (four floppies in a manila envelope) and that books should be sent media rate. (Actually slightly more expensive in this case, and technically comics can’t be sent media rate.) If she were to process them, she told me, they would arrive postage due. A little at a loss, but already invested in the stamps, I sent out the first five packages out with postage sufficient for media mail… But I can’t help but note that this is another case of the USPS being a fucking obstacle small business instead of a catalyst.

RECORDS LISTENED TO IN FEBRUARY

This past month I listened to 354 records, a total that I wouldn’t be able to achieve with out the perk of a day-job that is almost entirely work-from-home. Yay cool day-job! In a weird compulsion (see Inner Demon notes above!) I was determined to hit an average of 10 records a day. Why? I dunno. I was compulsed. Interestingly, this brought it to my attention that I’ve been lax in adding all of my 7″ records to my discogs collection. (Also a compulsion, though a purposeful one. Someday either I or my wife will need to sell the collection.) …So expect me to listen to more 7″ records in March as well as I try to amend that database.

For what it’s worth: I’m defining “record” as the whole package, a boxset or double LP or whatever is just considered one record. I’m defining a “listen” as one pull from the shelf, even if I play the record multiple times. I only count it a new listen if I reshelf it and then pull it again on a new day.

Nix Comics January 2024 Update

NIX COMICS FUNDRAISER

Last year I began what I’ve called the “Nix 2024 Fundraiser.” It’s basically just an attempt to divorce myself from the drama and expense of crowdfunding platforms; I’d rather go at my own pace, use my own voice, and not give a cut to corporations that are increasingly dubious in my eyes. I doubt I’ll get the same response as a Kickstarter campaign, but what the fuck do I have to lose by trying?

Part of my plan is to proceed in phases. Small goals that can be achieved with a fluid structure and limited individual stress. Phase One of my plan was to create a new website to run the sales part of the Fundraiser. It cost me $216.40 to set up nix2024.com, which I hoped to make back by selling art and discount back issues. It was my plan to get Phase One done by the end of January.

I suppose that part of the plan is more or less worked. I ran a 60% off back issues sale through the first part of the year. I made back $141.50 of my $216.40. Not ideal, but also not the end of the world.

STUFF IN THE WORKS

2024 Subscription Drive:
Phase two of my plan is to open pre-orders for the 2024 Nix Comics publications. I don’t like launching such things until the books themselves are basically ready to go to print, which they aren’t. Watch for collected trade paperbacks of older Nix Comics Material as I retire the back issue catalog. Also watch for new zines like the Tales from the Crate record collecting zine and new issues of Out of Time and How to Collect Comics the Nix Way.

Phase three? That’ll be new full color collaborative comics. Knock on wood we get there this year!

Unexpectedly, I was hit with a Phase 2.a. The Herbert Cooper Gallery is a new non-profit art gallery here in Columbus, located at 74 Parsons Avenue. The Gallery has opened up a room full of local artist/vendors including Nix Comics. Right now on display are back issues, some of which are my final copies, part of my Sketchbook Picture Sleeves catalog, and various pieces of original art by myself and Nix Artists. My hope is this will help replace the gap left after closing up the What the Rock?! space a few years back. Grand opening is Saturday, February 3rd from noon to 8pm. The Reception for this quarter’s main attraction, Rob W. Jones is 6pm to 8pm, which is when you’ll likely catch me there!

2023 WRAP UP

I didn’t forget! My tradition of sharing my annual Revenue and Expenses continues. I’ll say this though, it was another weird year. I spent half of it looking for a decent day job. (I ended up with a great one at Columbus State Community College in the grants department) That would ordinarily result in more comics, but I’ve also been dealing with some health stuff for over a year. Sciatica resulting from a bulging disc has left me in states ranging between mild distracting pain to bed ridden. I’m taking gabapentin for relief, which leaves me dopey and drowsy. The end result is that all I created and published last year were three of my Nix Singles poster Zines. I did manage to do three shows (SPACE, CXC, and the WFMU record fair) Basically, I ended up in the black, but revenue was mostly based on old stuff.

RECORDS LISTENED TO JANUARY 2024:

I’m going to track and post the records I listen to every month. I did this a couple of years ago, and while I don’t know if anyone cares all that much, I think it gives a good overview of what I consider the soundtrack to Nix Comics.

Most of the record choices are random. I walk up to my collection and grab a record without looking too hard. For 45s, I’ll often grab a stack resulting in a run of a certain artist (Suzi Quatro this past month, for instance.) A couple of times I did deep dives: Listening to all of my Blasters records and all of my Norton records Rolling Stones-Covers Juke Box singles. I wish I could say that those deep dives resulted in deep thoughts, but honestly they just kinda elicited a “fuck yeah!” from my brain.

For what it’s worth: I’m defining “record” as the whole package, a boxset or double LP or whatever is just considered one record. I’m defining a “listen” as one pull from the shelf, even if I play the record multiple times. I only count it a new listen if I reshelf it and then pull it again on a new day. Dig? Cool.

    Nix Comics: 2022 Wrap Up

    2022 Revenue and Expenses

Here ’tis… That annual post that about 10 or so people eagerly await: The Nix Comics Revenue and Expenses Confession… er… Report. This year, like last, I’m finishing up in the black. Also like last year, this was out of necessity, as I’ve been in a continued state of semi-employment, despite finally getting a B.A. in Public Policy, Management, and Leadership. (I honestly thought I’d be gainfully employed by this time and back to throwing money at projects with no regard for their money making potential.)

That’s the good news, and I’m not complaining. In last year’s report I didn’t list personal expenses as a line item, because, well all of the money I made making comics went to personal expenses. I was pretty much at a zero balance. The net of $447.35 for 2022 is actual money waiting on 2023 projects. (And of course, knock on wood, barring any sudden personal expenses.) That’s pretty cool! Thanks to everyone who has supported me!

A Little more detail on the revenue:

On-Line sales: I performed an experimental divestment from crowdfunding platforms in 2022. In particular, there are aspects of Kickstarter that I’ve never particularly liked: The whole “Got A Long Way To Go and a Short Time To Get There” model of funding is an emotional rollercoaster that I can do without, I don’t like the formatting constraints of a Kickstarter campaign, and I don’t like the potential for guilt by association with anti-union actions or block-chain use. This meant trying to drive more traffic directly to my website, particularly when doing pre-orders for Tales from the Crate #7 and Sketchbook Picture Sleeves Volume 2.

In the end, the results were pretty much what you’d expect. I made less money. My feelings about the brand and process aside, its what people seem to be programmed for. (And, well, the algorithms of the various social media giants. Yes, they probably tamp down crowdfunding requests, but it seems more they tamp down on individuals asking for pre-orders even more.)

Grant: Long Story Short: I opened up the year with what I thought was a great idea for a combination self-promotion/ICARP project. The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) agreed and gave me a grant to pay for it! The United States Postal Service decided and to dispose of my art in an undisclosed manner. (Thanks to GCAC for letting me repurpose the funds for printing other projects!)

Events: While I didn’t actively “divest” from doing comic shows, I did actively only do comics-related events that had zero buy-in. (That ended up being SPACE, where I worked off my table table fee for Bob Corby, and my own release party graciously hosted by the Bookspace. It meant no CXC for the first time in the history of the “big indie” Columbus show, which I kind of missed, although as it turns out, a sciatica attack probably would’ve impaired my ability to table anyway.

I did make something of a return to non-conventional marketplace type events and did pretty well. Expect more of me at community arts events and record swaps in the coming years. They tend to be a little hit or miss for a random comics guy, but honestly, the high end is better than any comics show. (Both for sales and those intangible type things like “community building.”)

Consignment: I opened up the year selling some comics for a friend on eBay. This number is my net commission after pay-out, fees, and shipping to avoid it looking like I had massive expenses and sales in this report. The interesting part of doing this work was that it reminded that I essentially started Nix Comics with a massive eBay sale. I find myself wondering if I could replicate that in 2023 somehow to refill my coffers and return to some of the rewarding but expensive collaborative work that I love.

Commissioned Art: Hey! I did album art this year! Scratch that off of the bucket list! I also did my first ever Sketchbook Picture Sleeve commission and a pet(s) portrait. Didn’t think I’d ever do the latter.

Wholesale: I’ve pretty much packed t in when it comes to wholesale. I sell stuff to Lost Weekend, Laughing Ogre and the Wexner Center Gift Shop because I want to be part of the community and enjoy my partnership with those businesses, but honestly putting books in stores is a lot of work for very little reward.

    ASK YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD CARTOONIST 6-24-2022

In the context of the survey connected to my “Meet Your Neighborhood Comic Artist” project, one of my neighbors asked:

    Are more Nix forthcoming?”

    Hey Neighbor!*

Yep! I just released a very limited edition zine and record set featuring the record that I did art for: the Zack Static Sect’s “Down At Slim’s” single. In the zine I talk about meeting Zack on-line and the process we went through getting his art done for his 7” and forthcoming LP.  As of this writing there are only 5 copies of it left.  $10 plus shipping. Not available in any stores, only on the Nix Comics home page.

    Draft Cover TFC #7

I have two more Nix publications featuring my own writing and artwork basically in the can:  a second volume of my collected Sketchbook Picture Sleeves and a seventh (!) issue of my record collecting zine. Tales from the Crate.

As of this writing I’m still looking at printer quotes to decide how to price these two books. Once I have that nailed down I’ll do some sort of pre-order sale. (Kinda down on Kickstarter these days, so it will likely be through this website.)

It’s my hope that I’ll have them ready by August 5th for my pop-up event at Blockfort in downtown Columbus. Basically, I’ll be setting up all of the pic sleeves I’ve been creating for the past 5 years (Or at least the remaining ones after the book pre-sale!) The plan is to spin the records in the back room while the art is on display. Blockfort has it listed as a “DJ event” but I prefer to think of it more as a record party!

That pop-up event is actually the opening night for a month long exhibit by three other terrific artist who also do “graphic narrative.”  It’s titled “The Self is the Story” and the featured artists are M.S. Harkness, Mariana Weflen, and Gloria Shows. I’m super honored to be included in their opening night. I hope a lot of people come out!

    Thanks for taking the survey!

    Best!

    Ken
