ASK YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD COMIC ARTIST 6-13-22

Looks like my plan of answering one question per week from my “Meet Your Neighborhood Comic Artist” survey were overly ambitious! I promise I’ll get to them all though! (Just a couple left after this one.)  I’ll also be posting the results of all survey questions soon on the ICARP page as a precursor to a zine/report titled “The Great EDDM Debacle.”  ANYWAYS…

In the context of the survey connected to my “Meet Your Neighborhood Comic Artist” project, one of my neighbors asked:

“Who are your favorite middle-aged (45-ish and up) women comics authors and artists?”

Hey Neighbor!*

Terrific question!

Check out Summer Pierre. She does a great job of using her art to contextualize her life as an artist with personal interests and cultural touchstones and icons. Her graphic auto-bio, “All the Sad Songs” is a particular favorite of mine, but you may have to work to find it: I seem to remember her saying that it was out of print on twitter.

I also like Sacha Mardou’s first volume of “Sky in Stereo” quite a bit. Thanks to limited money and time, I haven’t read her second volume of this, but I suspect its pretty great too. Maybe you can beat me to it and report back!

I think that they both are actually slightly under the 45+ age range, but you also might want to seek out Anya Davidson and Julia Wertz, who both make truly awesome comics.

Thanks for taking the survey and hope this gave you a good start on a reading list!

Best,
Ken
