Nix Comics May 2024 Update

What happened In May 2024? Not much in terms of comics and zines.

Blame a busy April with a trip to Austin and SPACE, if you want. I was ready for a break. I’m finding more and more limitations on my stamina thanks to my horrible back and day job job obligations. Thoughts of a million projects (starting up the Indie Comics Fair again, finishing my TPBs, the umpteen zines and comics I have in various stages of completion.) are running through my brain, but finding the time and energy to do any of it is.. is… well.. vexatious. I’m in a bit of a doldrum, if I’m being honest.

The above cartoon is from my series of “Conversations with my Inner Demons.” Those are mostly too rough to share, but I’d like to find the time to turn that into a real comic. Maybe a web comic?

I did manage to finish up a bunch of new Sketchbook picture sleeves, many which are now available at the Herbert Cooper Gallery… though some have sold already.

I also started a new photoshop painting exercise along the lines of “Abstracts in Isolation.” Each of these includes a self portrait in silhouette, so more about expressionism than abstracts. I’ll probably eventually do a small (short run) print collection of these, but that’s likely a year off.

One plus of working at home is that I do get to indulge in my own soundtrack. As I’ve taken the time to record that indulgence for posterity this year, the weird compulsions have started up. For instance, at one point I listened all of my Raunch Hands records. That would happen whether I was tracking listens or not, but when it occurred to me that this would make the Raunch Hands loom large in the stupid word-cloud I make every month. So I pulled out a stack of Ramones records to effective demote a perfectly fine band in an image that means nothing. 

Another weird jag I got on: I listened to at least one record by every artist named Smith: Patti, Carl, Warren, and the rest. The only conclusion I came to was that I probably have too many Carl Smith Records, though honestly they’re all pretty good and I don’t think I’ve ever invested more than a couple bucks in any of them.
